Origin: Northern India, naturalised in Brazil
Traditional herbal uses: The Samambaia (Pronounced sah-mahm-BYE-uh), as they are known in Brazil, or lace ferns, are one of many species which grow in the rainforests as well as drier tropical Latin American forests. Samambaia has been traditionally used as a blood cleanser, for upper respiratory problems and fevers, rheumatism and skin problems. It is also used for urinary infections and painful joints and tendons.

This plant was nearly dead when my first husband rescued it and although though Gerry is gone from us, “Geralidinho” (“little Gerry”) has provided abundant cuttings and much love to those of us left behind.
